Ireland’s mountain & hill range boundaries mapped for first time

A map showing accurate perimeter boundaries for Ireland’s upland areas has never been presented on a website… until now.

In 2015, hillwalking author Kieron Gribbon compiled and published the first-ever list of geographical High Points based on Ireland’s upland areas. It may seem quite surprising that such a list hadn’t existed before, but there was one very good reason for that. The perimeter boundaries of Ireland’s mountain and hill ranges had never been accurately defined.

In order to compile the list, Kieron Gribbon first had to come up with a very specific set of criteria to define what a mountain / hill range actually is. Using this criteria, he then sketched upland area perimeters on 1:50,000 scale Ordnance Survey maps. Using the perimeters he had drawn, compiling the High Point list itself became a very straightforward exercise.

Three years have now passed since the list was first published, but we can finally announce that a digital version of Kieron Gribbon’s Irish Upland Areas map has now been created for The Ireland Walking Guide website. For your convenience, we have also added it below.

Wherever possible, upland areas have been named on the map as they have been on published maps and by other geographical resources. However, many of the areas have never been named before. In these cases, the unnamed areas have been assigned new names.

Feel free to take a look through the new map at your leisure and give us some feedback if you wish. We hope you will find it to be a useful reference in the future.
